Editorial Standards
Editorial Standards & Ethics
The Eccentric sets out below the standards by which it produces and edits its content.
Independence. Editorial decisions are made by our editorial team, independently of the commercial or other interests of any third parties.
Sourcing and verification. We check facts before publication and aim to represent people and events fairly and in context. Where a claim rests on a single or unverified source, we say so. Quotations are reproduced accurately and in the sense in which they were given.
Authorship and accountability. Every article carries the name of its author, and every author has a profile page. Overall editorial responsibility rests with the Editor.
However, the views and opinions expressed by contributors are their own. Their accounts of events and the conclusions they draw do not necessarily reflect the views of The Eccentric, the Editor or the Eccentric Club.
Fairness and right of reply. Where an article makes a significant criticism of a named person or organisation, we offer them a fair opportunity to respond.
Conflicts of interest. Contributors disclose any personal, financial or institutional interest in the subjects they write about.
What we will not publish. We decline content that is defamatory or misleading, that breaches an embargo held by another party, or that exists only to place links. Editorial judgement rests with the Editor.
Advertising and sponsored content. Advertising and sponsorship never influence our coverage. Any sponsored, gifted or paid-for material is clearly labelled, kept distinct from editorial content, and does not exceed it. Payment can buy advertising space; it cannot buy editorial treatment.
Links. Where an outbound link is sponsored, affiliate, gifted or otherwise commercial, it carries rel="sponsored" (or nofollow), in line with search-engine guidance. Editorial links — those we choose on the merits — are ordinary followed links.
Corrections. We correct errors openly. See our Corrections Policy.
